100% Compostable Sanitary Pads

Sanitary pads are a necessity for 50% of the world population. Menstrual hygiene product penetration is extremely low and a major health concern in most developing countries due to: a) lack of awareness on menstrual hygiene, b) access to product, c) disposal issues, and, d) affordability. This technology is an affordable machine to manufacture 100% compostible sanitary napkins and can employ unskilled and uneducated deprived labour (especially women) who can be trained easily in 15 days. A mini factory is set up with 1 machine that operates both manually and semi-automatically, and can be set up in just 500 square feet space for operations and storage of raw materials and products. 1,000 – 5,000 napkins can be manufactured daily. Napkins are made from indigenous materials like banana fibre, jute, water hyacinth, bagasse etc. Post disposal the sanitary napkins turn into bio-manure. These sanitary napkins are very cheap due to materials used, but the quality remains uncompromisingly high. This frugal technology can be deployed quickly and is environment friendly. It is India’s 1st ~100% compostable sanitary pad and 2nd globally.

Agro and Wood Waste Conversion into Biofuels

Agriculture waste disposal/utilisation can overcome major challenges: 1) disposal/utilization of agricultural residues that remain in the field after crop harvesting, 2) disposal/utilization of residues from industries like rice mills, sugar mills, palm oil mills, bamboo processing units, saw mills etc, 3) deforestation for making charcoal to meet the domestic fuel requirements, 4) use of fossil fuels/charcoal/wood in industrial/commercial/domestic sectors to meet their energy requirements, and, 5) unemployment. This technology provides integrated solutions for processing and converting agricultural & wood waste into usable biofuels i.e. briquettes, pellets, pucks and granules. The process involves sizing of the oversized materials, drying of the wet materials, separation of impurities like sand, stones etc and then conversion into densified fuel forms to make it efficient for handling, transportation and usage. This technology can be applied – a) at the rural level for utilising the agro residues that remain in the field, thus reducing the uncontrolled open burning of crop resides, b) at the small industries level for utilising the residues from agro industries like peanut shells, rice husk, wood dust and Ccips etc., c) At the large industries level for utilising their residues like bagasse from sugar mills, palm EFB and fibre from palm oil mills.

Water Treatment through Capacitive De-ionization Technology

Clean drinking water is a major challenge in the African continent and traditional purification methods do not stand practical implementation. A few key challenges for traditional methods are: a) removes essential minerals with contaminants, b) high water wastage, c) high operating costs, d) high power consumption, d) lack of access to purified water, and, d) lack of skilled labour to support operations of the purification plant. Capacitive Deionization (CDI) is an innovative technology used to desalinate water without using resin or membranes and can treat ground or surface water containing high dissolved salts, fluorides, heavy metals, arsenic, nitrates, virus and bacteria to produce clean drinkable water that meets WHO standards. Traditionally ground water treatment is done using Reverse Osmosis Technology. This technology has a high operating cost due to usage of chemicals and replacement of membranes for delivering drinking water. CDI is an excellent alternative as it is a high recovery system with water wastage at just 20% against 70% from a RO system, no use of chemicals, consumes very low power with the lowest operating cost for treating water compared to any system in the market today.

A lot of grain crops are grown in Africa, especially maize and rice. Also, cassava is grown in abundance. An automated process not only saves a lot of labour, but also becomes a source of income to people who own the grinding and milling machines. These machines are hardly available in Africa. The grinding and milling machine designed by us is suitable for grinding various types of grains, such as maize, sorghum, rice, wheat etc. and also cassava and chicken feed. It has been customised for African crops and environment. It is low-cost, but efficient. The machine can be run with a diesel engine, a petrol engine or an electric motor. Bhungroo

Bhungroo delivers its services in waterlogged areas, drought affected areas as well as in areas affected by erratic rainfall. It also enables farmers to get crops in salt affected soils as well as seasonally eroded soil. Bhungroo can work in those areas where annual rainfall is extremes i.e. between 300 and 2100 mm. In flood situations, multiple Bhungroos with associated serial injection model can work wonders. Bhungroo, a Gujarati (Indian) colloquial, means straw or hollow pipe. Bhungroo ensures irrigation water to farmers during drought in most cost-effective manner. Bhungroo helps poor farmers in two ways: a) in summer it ensures adequate, timely and appropriate irrigation water to the farmers at their doorsteps; b) it frees farmers' lands from excess storm water through filtering, injecting and storing those excess water underground with an objective of accessing that water during dry season. Various applications of BHUNGROO are: 1) drought proofing, 2) guaranteed water 3) saving from erratic rain, 4) desertification control, 5) ensuring water, sanitation, health, 6) it is a tailor-made solution which changes based upon 27 variables.

PUSA Mini Soil Testing and Fertilizer Recommendation Meter

Soil profiles, vary considerably from one location or region to the next, depending on geology, hydrology and climate. Without knowing the exact quality of the soil, farmers use excessive and less effective blend of fertilizers that results in the deterioration of the soil. Hence, soil testing becomes an essential part of a fertility program and for profitable crop production. This technology is a programmable, portable, low-cost equipment, named PUSA Soil Test Fertilizer Recommendation Meter (STFR) Kit, that brings soil testing and fertilizer recommendation at farmers’ doorstep. This not only tests soil parameters but also gives crop-specific fertilizer recommendation and suggests ameliorants for problem soils. The aim is to set up mini soil testing labs across the globe that will fill the long felt vacuum of a quantitative soil testing kit to support the soil testing and increase farmers’ access to soil testing, help them to achieve higher yields owing to soil test based fertilizer application.

Remediation of Soils and Drought Mitigation through Active Silicon (Ortho Silicic Acid)

Generation of active form of silicon from the potential silicon is negligible in East African soil. East Africa has witnessed many droughts since 2000, which has hampered agriculture sector substantially. Limitation of active silicon has contributed to poor soil structure as well as the nutrient availability to plants, leading to very poor yields. Improved soil structure through active silicon would facilitate better water holding capacity thereby reducing impact due to erratic water availability to crops. Soil amendment formulation through CNG (Compressed Nano Granulation) technology, is powered with active silicon (Ortho Silicic Acid) along with other proprietary ingredients. Active silicon triggers physiochemical and biological processes in the soil. Silicon is one of the nutrient elements, abundantly present in the soil as complexes with other elements such as aluminium and calcium (potential/latent silicon). Generation of active form of silicon from the potential silicon is negligible in East African soils.

SPRE Flexi Domestic Bio Gas Technology

Safe, efficient and affordable (SPRE) flexible bio gas plant for families in rural areas. This inventive flexible biogas technology converts biological waste to energy through domestic anaerobic bio- digester materials such as cow dung, poultry litter, food waste, agriculture waste etc. used in the biogas plant as input material. The plant is easy to install and maintain, with capacity to serve family farms through remote monitoring. It is cost efficient with less space requirement, gives more biogas storage capacity and has constant biogas flow via booster pumps. SPRE gives computerized data apps for remote monitoring & after sales service. They have installed 250 bio-gas plant to currently benefit 1,000 people. It has received best social innovation Award in 2015 by Miller Foundation, Santa Clara university, California USA in 2015 with one full year mentorship provided by expert from Silicon Valley. It won top social award for innovation by Ministry of External Affairs, Govt Of India. 105 biogas digesters were supplied to Kenya based Indian agriculture consultant, and the Ethiopia SPRE business model is ready.

Solar Conduction Dryer (SCD)

Agriculture sector is the largest contributor in Rwanda economy. But, 30-40% of food is lost every year due to lack of post-harvest storage facility and processing technology. 23 million ton of fruits and vegetables go to waste. This solution is Solar Conduction Dryer (SCD) that works on the principle of drying. (Drying of foods implies the removal of water from the foodstuff.) The SCD is an electricity free solar powered food dehydrator that reduces moisture content in agri-animal produce so that farmers and rural women can preserve seasonal produce up to 1 year without using any chemicals and earn additional income through sale of dehydrated products. SCD is the first technology in the world that uses conduction, convection, radiation as all modes of heat transfer making it one of the most efficient systems. SCD works without the need of electricity with zero operating cost, making it accessible and practical at areas with power shortage. It reduces 30-60% food losses. It reduces drying time by 30-45%, cost of dryer is 2-3 times less than other dryer with no moving components, and it dismantles easily. The product is developed especially for individual women farmers.

Smart Panel Pay-go Solar Home Systems

There are about 1.2 billion people, comprising of 16% of the world's population that still live without access to reliable electricity supply. This unique platform called Pay-as-you-go (Pay-Go) technology is a metering system that provides solar as a service to the end users. This technology has been improvised to develop the smart panel technology. Through smart panel technology, it can monitor the panels remotely along with detecting the GPS location, performance data and remote diagnosing of issues. They are completely tamper proof, weather proof and theft proof, and tackles variation in voltage efficiently making them insurable. After an initial payment, the customer can make small monthly payments that add towards the total cost of the system. At the end of the term, varying 12 to 24 months, the individual owns the system. Installments can be paid through multiple mobile phone platforms and physical points. Its smart panel technology is made to serve the rural population. The technology has been deployed in the Indian market for the past 3.5 years, with a customer base of over 35,000. Through its experience it has developed the understanding of scaling up rapidly.

According to IEA’s 2015 World Energy Outlook, 17% people in the world do not have access to electricity - in India (19% population), (22%) in rest of Asia, and (83%), the largest, in Sub-Saharan Africa. Electricity poverty, in turn, leads to economic poverty. A 2010 Study, by World Energy Council, confirms “energy poverty is the main reason for rural poverty” that “restricts the income level leading to economic stagnation or slow growth. IoT based Solar Community Drinking Water Systems

The drinking water problem has several facets - availability and access, modes of purification and economic viability. In rural areas, where access to sweet water may be at sources miles away, it is women and young girls who walk long distances to fetch water taking away time from education or other economic activities. Enlightened rural households boil water or use gravity filters, while others drink what they fetch. These solutions do not remove dissolved solids, heavy metals and bacteriological contaminations, and therefore the problem of iron, fluorides, arsenic and often pathogens remains unresolved. This technology provides clean drinking water optionally using solar powered water purification systems to communities of urban slums, villages, schools, to traveler’s hospitals etc. Locally available water is purified on-site and people are encouraged to carry drinking water in their own vessels that are disinfected by machines on site. This technology can deploy a community based solution using solar energy to pump water and purify on-site employing energy efficient electronics for optimum power transfer, requires no transportation and at a marginal cost. This intervention can surely reduce the burden of disease from the local communities.

Farmers in Asia and Africa lose more than 30% of the crop productivity due to diseases. Using toxic chemicals, as the only solution, is either indiscriminate (3X), or non-existent and also has shown to go down due to climate change scenario. This technology provides the best performing and safest option that works on the principle of "prevention (is better than cure)". The products can be applied as spray, drenching and seed coating to prevent bacterial, fungal and nematode diseases of crops, thereby improving productivity at greater than 10X Return on Investment. MIRA CHANNEL - Mobile Channel for Rural Women on Maternal and Child Health (RMNCH+A) and Behaviour Change Communication Tools on MCH and Health

51.1% of women opt for traditional method of home-based birth and only 48.8% of births are assisted by semi-skilled health workers in India, putting both mother and child health at high risk. Even today many families in the rural areas believe that giving birth at home is convenient and much safer, against medical advice of high risk to mother and child. This technology helps reduce maternal and infant mortalities. MIRA is an integrated mobile phone channel providing health communication & information to rural women; and timely connect for them with public & private health system for critical health needs which comes as a solution to this problem. MIRA has multiple channels like pre-natal, child immunization (0-5 years), post-natal care, newborn care, family planning and adolescent girl health to improve maternal & child health indicators using RMNCH+A approach (set by WHO).
